Additional Edmonton Oilers Info

The Edmonton Oilers played its first season in 1972, as one of the 12 founding franchises of the World Hockey Association (WHA). They joined the NHL in 1979 during the NHL–WHA merger.

After joining the NHL, it didn’t take long for the Edmonton Oilers to establish dominance on the ice. Edmonton Oilers Ticket Holders flocked to the Oilers’ original home stadium, Northlands Coliseum throughout the 1980s to watch Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, and Wayne “the Great One” Gretzky lead their team to win the Stanley Cup an outstanding 5 times in 7 years. Because of their success, the Edmonton Oilers team of this era has been officially named a dynasty by the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In a surprising move, Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in the late 1980s. The loss of Gretzky along with other key players had an immediate impact on the team. The Edmonton Oilers were only able to finish in third place in their division in 1989. Things didn’t improve for the franchise until 1997 when they finally made the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.

Edmonton Oilers Ticket Holders would see their team return to the Stanley Cup championship series in 2006, but ultimately lose to the Hurricanes. The team wouldn’t return to the post-season playoffs again until 2017.

Despite recent challenges, there’s no denying that the Edmonton Oilers are a legendary franchise who have earned their rightful spot in hockey’s history books. Edmonton Oilers fans can get tickets to watch the Oilers at their new home stadium, Rogers Place, at Golden Tickets.
